Together Segal designs apparel for the oft overlooked petite section, bringing classic silhouettes proportioned to those of us clocking in at a little less than 5’5”. Melissa and Amy are a welcome addition to the sale and we’re looking forward to trying these pieces on in person after seeing them pop up all over Instagram in the last year. Full disclosure- I’m 5’7” and have loved the styles myself and will make a beeline for the new shirtdress! Ladies, take it away:
Can you share a bit about Together Segal and how it came to be?
Togethersegal was founded by twin sisters, Amy and Melissa Segal. As petite women, we wanted to create designs that are tailored to fit women of petite stature for everyday wear. Not only do we care about fit, we care about quality, thoughtfulness, comfort and style when buying and wearing clothes, and we bring the same care into our design process. We have made a decision together to commit our energy, creativity and our unique ability to work together as a team to design clothing that makes us feel good, and will do the same for other petite women.
Tell us about the process of developing a new collection. What inspired your Fall line?
The best part of the process in developing a new collection is thinking about how we want our customers to feel when wearing our designs. Comfort, fit, ease, confidence and style are always at the forefront of our minds, as are the fabrics we choose. Fabrics always inspire our designs. Finding sustainable fabrics, that are beautiful and feel good on the skin, is so important to us. We love creating designs that offer timelessness and simplicity, providing longevity and good basics for our customers. We’re minimalists at heart and we love a neutral palette, so nature and natural elements have been a big part of the inspiration for our new fall designs. Choosing West Texas as the landscape for our most recent photo shoot nicely complements our brand and color story for fall.
What does a typical (and by “typical” we obviously mean non-typical) day in the life look like for you?
We start our day with prioritizing our to-do list. There are always too many tasks at hand, so "divide and conquer" is essential: each of us takes on her own list. As workout enthusiasts, we hit the trail or gym by mid-morning to make for a more energized and productive day. We like to mix up our weekly work space by choosing different environments that inspire us and enhance our efficiency. We’re typically juggling design ideas, manufacturing, marketing, finance, social media, meeting and collaborating with other local brands, and seeking out/lining up events for each season on a weekly basis. Work/life balance is very important to us, so we each find ways of winding down the day with either a dip in Barton Springs, or a walk in the neighborhood with friends and family.
What’s one piece of advice you’d offer to someone interested in launching their own maker/design business?
Don’t get intimidated by what you don’t know, you will learn as you go.
Identify what sets you apart and stay true to your mission.
Choose partners wisely and realize you each have a key role to play.
Seek out and leverage your resources.
Start small - if clothing brand, start with a few key designs.
Last great travel destination?
Marfa, Texas! We just returned from West Texas for our fall photo shoot. As designers, we loved visiting Marfa where we were able to meet with people in the local creative community. Marfa’s unique combination of West Texas isolation and high art really gets the creative juices flowing! New favorite spots: Stelina, Sentinal, The Marfa Store, Raba Marfa.
