For those who might not be familiar with ELOI can you give us a rundown of your business and what you’ll be bringing to the sale?
I sell silk scarves and bandanas printed with patterns that I make out of construction paper cutouts. A lil' trippy...
Your technique for creating your patterns is highly unique, can you share some insight into how this process goes?
I read and research a lot looking for a story line for a new design, usually coming from some mythological figure or a song I'm loving and can feel imagery to. I always start with color scheme. It takes some time, finding some cool ones that feel unexpected. Then I start cutting the paper and it's probably equal parts strict planning and mind play. Then it is traced into the computer using Adobe Illustrator and sent away for print.
Your work with ELOI has led you to some really awesome collaborations with other companies. What was a notable collaboration for you and your business?
They've all been so fun, I love custom projects. The most notable was probably with Teva or ACE Hotel.
What’s one piece of advice you’d offer to someone interested in launching their own maker/design business?
Try not to take it personally if people don't respond to what you're pushing. This is a painful one for me, throwing your whole self into your work and exposing it to judgement makes you feel SO raw, so if you figure this out, tell me how.
AND to get to know you a bit better…
Hometown: Grosse Pointe, Michigan (East Detroit)
Astrological Sign: Gemini (what else?)
What would we find you doing on a Sunday afternoon in Austin? Worrying about Monday.
What was the last big risk you took? Probably disregarding the gas light on my car on Monday. It was completely drained during rush hour in the middle of 35.
Where do you find inspiration away from the computer? I'm not on the computer much at all, I see it as a depressing distraction. I've outsourced most of my computer work (besides some email) to other very talented folks that enjoy it much more than I. Oh so back to inspiration, I truly love mythology and feel that I have barely scratched the surface of these stories, which is exciting. I can't keep the confusing incestuous relationships straight so don't ask me anything about that.
Last great travel destination? I was in Mexico City in February and I'm going back this Friday. I LOVE it there. The food is delicious and the architecture incredible and colors everywhere... Why can't America use more color? We're so boring.
