A sponsor since day one, and full disclosure, the other half of Feliz, Laura Uhlir of Olive is back on deck for her fifth Feliz. Olive quickly made a name for itself as a go-to for independent designers, creative dressing, fun jewelry and gift goodies in East Austin. We always leave jonesing for a mohair skirt, a chunky silver choker or pretty pottery. Uhlir took a sec to catchup with us before Sunday's big event -- read on.
Feliz: Olive has sponsored Feliz since it's inception, yes? What keeps you coming back as a business owner?
Laura: Yep! We co-sponsored with our then shop partner, the defunct & much missed Domy Books, & saw an almost immediate return on our investment. We got to meet so many designers & shoppers in one quick day. It was such a perfect way to launch our shop. Our participation in Feliz was just two short months after we opened our doors for business in 2012 & I think it really made a splash for us. Customers kept coming in saying "Oh! I saw this at Feliz!" It was great. So, we've participated every year since.
F: Is there anything in particular you look forward to returning to the event year over year?
L: It's become almost like a high school reunion for us at this point. So many designers & sponsor shops are repeats, like us, so it's super fun to catch up with everyone. That, & shopping too of course!
F: Your shop is in East Austin next to some of our favorites: Hillside Farmacy, Charm School Vintage, Quickie Pickie & tons more. Tell us about some of your favorite things to do in your neighborhood.
L: Well, the three you mentioned are all favorites of mine as well. I really could spend a whole day just on my block, East 11th Street, quite happily. You can't beat a long morning at Figure 8, especially if you're lucky enough to get there in the morning when then still have Taco Deli tacos. A little shopping at Charm School (I swear Shari, the owner, is a vintage wizard! She has the best stuff.) & Take Heart doesn't hurt. Afternoon oysters, fries & cocktails at Hillside is a must. Late nights at the Long Branch are truly my favorite.
F: It's the morning after Feliz. What do you do to recoup?
L: Sleep in! Then leisurely coffee & a facial. Gotta treat yourself ;)
