Friday Favorites: Kara Holekamp

Kara Holekamp is a native Texan, and has been living in Austin for 8 years working with some of this citiy's most creative minds. She's worked with Design Build AdventureOliveSpartan, and SISTER (to name a few). You may have spotted her last year's Feliz selling the lovely handcrafted wares of Hat Trick Woodworking. With her extensive knowledge of Austin and love of proper design, we asked Kara to list off some of her go-to spots in the city.

1. Ramen with good company

One of my favorite things to do with new or old friends is to go get ramen. Austin has accumulated a few good ramen places recently, and my all time favorite is Ramen Tatsuya.  Open for dinner from 5-10pm, the small restaurant develops a line at the door most nights. Don't let this scare you off-- Take this time to chat with whoever you're with, because once you get your bowl, you'll be shoveling noodles into your face.

2. Austin Style

The store that continually blows my mind with their collection of clothing and jewelry is Kickpleat.  This locally owned boutique stocks top-notch designers like Rachel Comey, Reality Studio, Acne, Base Range, MM6, Apiece Apart, etc. Go browse for a great source of inspiration for shapes and materials when you're feeling bored by your wardrobe!

Also, shout out to a favorite local apothecary line, Botanicals Folklorica, who uses hand foraged plants to make teas, infused honeys, smoke blends, smudges, and palo santo bundles.

3. Spacing out

If you haven't been to the James Turrell Skyspace on the UT campus-- GO!

A new addition to the University of Texas Landmarks art program, the structure sits on top the Student Activity Center and is best viewed at sunrise/sunset. The meditative space manipulates your view of the natural sky by projecting changing colors within the room.

4. Night Moves

During the grueling hot summers of Austin, everyone knows you have to swim to keep your sanity. Barton Springs Night Swim always restores my love for this weirdo city. Free to the public during the hours of 9-10pm, just after the sun goes down in the summer, the cool water and dim light feel romantic and rejuvenating.

5. Cocktails at Justine's

There is something about Justine's that always feels special to me. I love that I can sip on a rosé, described by the menu as 'raspberry lip gloss', and listen to Junior Kimbrough on vinyl. A great way to end a Summer night!
