Julia Hungerford is the wild drummer for John Wesley Coleman and Abigail Und Hansel. She is also the mindful chef and owner behind Schmaltz a vegetarian/vegan Jewish deli sandwich truck. She's one to tell rambling tales, full of surprises, a swimmer, has two sweet kitties Lucy and Ursa and is quick with a smile. Here are six songs Julia has been rocking out to lately and the reasons why she cant get them out of her head. At the bottom is a list of show dates so you can check out her drumming in action.
ONE|| It's Going to Be Easy- Doug Sahm
Songs about living and loving played by a man that knew all he could about Texas music. The melody on this one kills me. It's real nice for dancing or crying like any good country song should be.
TWO|| Nobody Wants A Lonely Heart- Arthur Russell
A unique record from this artist, it's usually known as his "country" record. This track is stunning. Such sultry horns and beautiful melody. I love the lyric: "As you eat, don't think of the one you love/ and on the street, don't look at the sky above." Those things are to be avoided when going through heartbreak.
THREE|| Tennessee Blues- Bobby Charles
Such a beautiful, wistful song. I'm from Tennessee and like to listen to this if I feel homesick.
FOUR|| Too Much On My Mind- the Kinks
Face to Face by the Kinks is one of my favorite records in the whole wide world, along with Something Else. Ray and Dave Davies wrote chillingly good songs, kind of like Zola in the swinging sixties.
FIVE|| Love that You Own- John Wesley Coleman III
Title track for the new record. I feel so lucky to play with such a wonderful band. Wes writes such great songs. People all over the country (world?) paid Wes $10 to write a song about whatever subject they chose. This one is about our friends' marriage.
SIX|| East Texas Plain- Greg Ashley
The opening track to Another Generation of Slaves. I like nothing more than perfect pop melodies with smart, dark lyrics and Greg Ashley is great at this. A great album with beautiful performances.
