Meet Nora + Team - the founder and friends behind Great Bean Chocolate! Since launching in sunny Austin, Texas in 2012, they've handcrafted chocolate bars that do more than just taste delicious - their functional ingredients can boost your health and uplift your mood. It all boils down to a simple mission: to spread happiness & wellbeing through chocolate.
They're a group of chocolate makers, artists, foodies, and designers who make up Great Bean Chocolate: the people who melt, sift, temper, ladle, trim, and wrap the ingredients that become chocolate bars.
At Great Bean, they aim to deliver the most delectable, nutrient-dense, sustainably grown, and fairy traded chocolate on the face of the Earth. Great Bean chocolate helps you achieve: A Higher State of Bean.
Can you tell us about Great Bean Chocolate and what y’all are bringing to Feliz this year?
Great Bean Chocolate was founded in Austin, Texas in 2012. We handcraft all of our bars with love using 100% organic ingredients and functional herbs. At FELIZ, we will have all five of our delicious chocolate bars for sample and sale; Bliss, Love, Energy, Mineral, and Focus. Each bar highlights a specific health function of chocolate by enhancing it with unique herbal blends. We will also bring a limited edition Holiday Bar along, as well as holiday sampler packs, and t-shirts.
What brought you to making chocolate bars?
I began experimenting with chocolate in 2007 when I became very interested in health. When I discovered that cacao really is the world's ultimate superfood, I wanted to share the amazing qualities of chocolate with people. I set out to create the healthiest chocolate possible, so I began working with raw, organic cacao, low glycemic sweeteners, and whole herbs in order to elevate body, mind, and soul.
Is life without chocolate really a life at all?
No! Chocolate is truly one of life's greatest pleasures. It contains brain-boosting compounds that elevate your mood, inspire passion, energize you and help you focus; it is true that chocolate makes you happy.
What’s the most glamorous part of your job?
Glamorous is not how I would describe my job. Any startup is a lot of hard work, and since our chocolate is literally made by hand, step by step, it is harder work than most. But there are definitely some great perks - the best parts of my job are: eating copious amounts of chocolate and working with an amazing team of creative people.
Who is on the “taste test” team and how do you decide if a new chocolate goes into production?
Typically when we roll out a new bar, I asked almost everyone I know to sample 5-10 potential versions of a flavor. I realize that not every ingredient will be a crowd pleaser, so it is important for me to crowd source the taste-testing feedback to make sure that my recipes are always delicious. One example of this was when we discovered that chocolate infused with orange was highly controversial- some people loved it, but most couldn't stand the thought of it!
Thank you so much! Can't wait to eat your goodies on November 2nd!
