Meet the Maker: Natalie Davis

With Feliz under a week away, we couldn't be more excited to introduce Natalie Davis of Autin's own Canoe. Natalie's leather goods will be for sale on Sunday at the Feliz Sale as well as on Wednesday evening at our Madewell x Feliz Pop Up from 6-9pm at the Domain in North Austin. Join us for a shopping party to kick off Feliz. Enjoy sips, small bites and our latest batch of fall arrivals. Plus, preview a selection by our favorite Feliz Makers —Hey MurphyCanoeSister, and Miranda Bennett—for sale during the event. But first let's find out how Natalie gets her inspiration and a little bit about her role co-founding Feliz in 2012 in this weeks first edition of Meet the Maker.

Tell us a little about yourself and what you’re bringing to Feliz this year?

Hello, I’m Natalie Davis of Canoe. I’m a leather worker and designer based in Austin. I’ll be bringing hand dyed and hand tooled leather home goods and accessories to Feliz this year. I will have the Open Road Armchair, a recent collaboration with KKDW, another Feliz designer. I’m super excited to be launching my new fragrance, Skive, at Feliz. It is a unisex natural perfume inspired by the scent of my studio. I can’t wait to hear what wonderful stories folks will tell when smelling it!

Tell us about your involvement with Feliz and how its grown since you started it?

I co-founded Feliz in 2012 with Abby Powell Thompson. We started with 25 vendors and a full weekend of events, from an opening party at West Elm, a day of workshops, and then the sale itself. We wanted to create an event that really highlighted the makers and gave folks a chance to get to know them personally. It’s been amazing to watch it grow over the years.  I’m so happy that it’s been flourishing and bringing in new makers and sponsors. It’s always my favorite show of the year because it’s a very personal experience and you get to hang out and chat with customers in a stunning setting.

Where is it easiest to find inspiration for Canoe?

I find inspiration by traveling and having time and space to think without distraction. It might come from a road trip, a walk in the neighborhood with my dogs, or a night out with my husband. Generally when I stop looking for it, it comes.

Are there any artists or organizations that you’re dying to do a collaboration with?

I’ve been really fortunate to do collaborations with many talented friends over the years. I’d love to work with a boutique hotel on a larger scale interior design project.

What’s your favorite thing about the Feliz sale?

I love how excited the audience gets about being in a beautiful space filled with thoughtful and well designed goods. It’s a stress-free day of shopping for the holidays where folks are just blissed out. Truly, it’s a magical day and a wonderful way to spend a Sunday.
