Vanessa! What up? Tell us a little bit about what you've been up to this summer.
Summer is always interesting because it is a traditional lull in shopping traffic but boost in creative energy. I spent it traveling- Kauai, Arizona, Florida, San Francisco- collaborating and scheming for Fall.
I love that you've been adding more embroidered phrases and quips - how do you come up with those?
I'm lucky to be surrounded by a lot of smart, witty people to bounce ideas off of- a lot of what ends up on bags starts out in conversations or texts with friends and then gets earmarked as a "good idea."
Do you think inspiration is something that strikes or is it something you have to actively work towards through the boredom?
Absolutely both! I think everyone has a natural ebb a flow in their process, but sometimes you still have to work and produce even in the midst of a creative dry spell. In my practice it is in these dry spells that the application of skills acquired in art school come into play- keeping journals of pieces of ideas to root through, being diligent about drawing out 10 or so variations on a design, flexing that creative muscle to search for something worth while. You don't always have the luxury of waiting for inspiration to strike so I think it is important to develop a comfortable routine process to turn to when you are struggling to get the juices flowing.
If someone asked you to describe "Austin fashion" what would you say to them?
I would tell them I wish I could understand "Austin fashion" but mostly it is a mystery to me. Austin is a place where you can go to an expensive special occasion restaurant and still find people in flip flops and baseball caps, but then later you go out to the bar and see someone in the most outrageous inspired sequin pant suit, or someone else who is pulling off a look that just makes you want to go home and throw away all of your clothes and start over. It is growing and bubbling here, which is very exciting. We are so lucky to have people (like Laura at Olive) who are dedicated to bringing Austinites elegant and stylish options you won't find at the mall, and also creating events and opportunities for people to dress up, show off, and get inspired at.
